Prairie Cone Flower – Ratibida columnifera

These prairie cone flowers are easing their way into autumn, missing a few of their 4-12 petals, a little bent at the stems with leaves starting to turn ruddy. The cones are typically longer than the petals. They like it dry and hot and they self-seed. The leaves and stems are said to be analgesic, good for head and bellyaches. Decoctions are used to treat poison ivy and rattlesnake bites. Handy, eh?

I found these growing in Westcliffe, CO.

One of my favorite topics, the intricate pine cone. It spirals from top to bottom in predictable 12 to 14 spirals, each leaf hiding a seed that will eventually blow away. I love them.

Wild roses in the autumn move from the pink and green of spring and summer to the crimson an yellow leaves of fall. I painted this with leftover paint from a larger work in order not to waste the leftover pigments. The image of the leaves, stems and surrounding ground litter was made by removing paint tith a rubber sculpting tool.

It’s late, late summer and I can still hike the eastern foothills of the Rockies. The weather has bee wonderful, warm and all clear cobalt skies. The grasses that thrive at timberline are yellow ochre and white, the evergreens remain their consistent mix of cadmium light, ultramarine with burnt umber. I’m amazed at the colors one can mix from 6 or 7 tubes.

When walking in the woods around my mom’s house, I always pick stuff up, like grasses, rocks, tree twigs and pine cones. I added the one painted here to my growing collection of conifer cones. The geometry of these fruits amaze me with their spiral symmetry.

This studies a small thistle I found while on a walk. The paper it’s painted on is a Strathmore product, that has a tan-ish cast and contains 30% recycled material. It’s the first time I’ve painted on it…it’s okay. I prefer white papers but it’s nice for experimenting with color and imagery.

This studies a dried Canada Thistle I found while taking a walk. It’s drawn with ink…I think this is the first drawing I’ve posted in that media.
A few weeks back while teaching beginners watercolor and pastel classes I became aware how REALLY important drawing skills are to any person learning to paint.
I now want to learn to draw better.

This painting shows alpine flowers as they start to bloom in the late spring. They are shown in the late afternoon sun as I started back from a day of fishing at Comanche Lake, elevation 11,000+ feet. I caught four large cutthroat trout and this image to reminds me of that day.

Mexican Fence Post Cactus – Pachycereus marginatus

The Mexican Fence Post is a species originating in Central Mexico. These grow to heights of 12 or more feet and have a diameter of 3 to 8″. Its star-shape cross section can have from 5 to 9 points..its thorns are far less vicious than other species of cacti. Flowers are pink-yellow or green-yellow. When planted side by side they make an effective fence. They like it hot, tolerate afternoon shade and are hardy to zone 9 (28 Deg F overnight).

I think they’re marvelous.

Dozens of varieties of Opuntia are in bloom in these early May days in Arizona. I found this blossom at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. I’m inspired in this painting by the semi-transparent petals and the contrast of vermilion against aquas, greens and purples.
