This studies a small thistle I found while on a walk. The paper it’s painted on is a Strathmore product, that has a tan-ish cast and contains 30% recycled material. It’s the first time I’ve painted on it…it’s okay. I prefer white papers but it’s nice for experimenting with color and imagery.

This studies a dried Canada Thistle I found while taking a walk. It’s drawn with ink…I think this is the first drawing I’ve posted in that media.
A few weeks back while teaching beginners watercolor and pastel classes I became aware how REALLY important drawing skills are to any person learning to paint.
I now want to learn to draw better.

Flat, late afternoon sun on a cold winter day in a dry Arizona desert made this prickly pear cactus jump with color and shadow. I saw it on the way back to the car after fishing…no bites that day.

This painting shows alpine flowers as they start to bloom in the late spring. They are shown in the late afternoon sun as I started back from a day of fishing at Comanche Lake, elevation 11,000+ feet. I caught four large cutthroat trout and this image to reminds me of that day.

Fairy Slippers, Calypso bulbosa are orchids, somewhat rare and a delight to find. These flowers were emerging along the Rainbow Trail in southeast Colorado.

Mexican Fence Post Cactus – Pachycereus marginatus

The Mexican Fence Post is a species originating in Central Mexico. These grow to heights of 12 or more feet and have a diameter of 3 to 8″. Its star-shape cross section can have from 5 to 9 points..its thorns are far less vicious than other species of cacti. Flowers are pink-yellow or green-yellow. When planted side by side they make an effective fence. They like it hot, tolerate afternoon shade and are hardy to zone 9 (28 Deg F overnight).

I think they’re marvelous.

This cactus grows in our neighborhood. It is low to the ground and spreads by growing outward from its middle. It blooms at night and has deliciosly fragrant blooms.The blooms when open are about 12″ across and closely spaced. A Giant Argentine Cactus in bloom is quite a sight to see.

I’m a fool for the subject matter (botany of the desert) which can be found at the Phoenix, AZ, Desert Botanical Garden. I’m a frequent visitor there. The geometry for this painting begins with paisley patterns, ending up with swirling movement from the background to the foreground.

Saguaro, the ubiquitous cactus of the Sonoran desert, mutate from time to time. When they do, they may form an intricately folded fan-like shape at the end of one or more branches. The fan may start to form when the cactus is dozens of years old (saguaros can live a couple hundred years). Other varieties of cactus are able to mutate in this way. To date, there is no explanation for why these plants decide to up and do this…they just do.

Brook Trout or Brookies or Salvelinus fontinalis are the ubiquitous American fish. They are native to this continent and thrive where water is cold and fast or cold and deep. They’re a favorite fish for the US Forest Service to plant as they have great sport fishing value, not too hard to catch. This guy painted here is full scale about 7-8 inches and is shown at full scale.
