Platte, watercolor, 9×12″, 2018, by Jean Krueger copyrighted with all rights reserved
I was hiking and found a rock that impressed me . It looked like a landscape. I’ve started a series of landscape paintings based upon the colors, shapes and contours I see in the rock. I am doing this as an exercise to paint quickly without too much analysis, letting the paint flow and granulate in watery washes. I’m limiting my pallet to no more than 5 colors. I tilt and turn the painting to direct the water’s flow. I plan to create a least landscapes from the same rock.
This is a simple concept but an effective way for me explore the watercolor media.

Oregon Grape displays the colors of the rainbow as it cycles through the growing season. The phase I’ve painted is what we see in the mid to late summer months here in the Rockies where I’m now staying for awhile.

This view is my drive home in the summertime. Typically, the clouds gather and a bit of rain falls each afternoon. After the shower, everything is a bit greener and the sky is full of sifted light filtering through to the mountains and western pastures. My painting is about the light as it slides through the clouds.

Thistle, 2018, professional watercolors on 184# wet media recycled, acid free paper, copyrighted with all rights reserved by Jean Krueger
This studies a small thistle I found while on a walk. The paper it’s painted on is a Strathmore product, that has a tan-ish cast and contains 30% recycled material. It’s the first time I’ve painted on it…it’s okay. I prefer white papers but it’s nice for experimenting with color and imagery.

A few weeks back while teaching beginners watercolor and pastel classes I became aware how REALLY important drawing skills are to any person learning to paint.
I now want to learn to draw better.

Flat, late afternoon sun on a cold winter day in a dry Arizona desert made this prickly pear cactus jump with color and shadow. I saw it on the way back to the car after fishing…no bites that day.

Mexican Fence Post Cactus – Pachycereus marginatus, pastel on hardboard, 20×16″, 2018, copyrighted with all rights reserved by Jean Krueger
The Mexican Fence Post is a species originating in Central Mexico. These grow to heights of 12 or more feet and have a diameter of 3 to 8″. Its star-shape cross section can have from 5 to 9 points..its thorns are far less vicious than other species of cacti. Flowers are pink-yellow or green-yellow. When planted side by side they make an effective fence. They like it hot, tolerate afternoon shade and are hardy to zone 9 (28 Deg F overnight).
I think they’re marvelous.

Opuntia, watercolor, 8×6″, 2018, copyrighted with all rights reserved by Jean Krueger
Dozens of varieties of Opuntia are in bloom in these early May days in Arizona. I found this blossom at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. I’m inspired in this painting by the semi-transparent petals and the contrast of vermilion against aquas, greens and purples.
