It’s late, late summer and I can still hike the eastern foothills of the Rockies. The weather has bee wonderful, warm and all clear cobalt skies. The grasses that thrive at timberline are yellow ochre and white, the evergreens remain their consistent mix of cadmium light, ultramarine with burnt umber. I’m amazed at the colors one can mix from 6 or 7 tubes.

The late summer air in the alpine landscape is still warm, 60-65 degrees F, although the wind can gust and make it feel cooler. But when I hike I’m in a sleeveless shirt and with pantlegs rolled up, working up a head of steam. The sky is just as blue as the pastels show and the grasses are drying, dying to naples yellow and light buff. However, those evergreens will weather all seasons looking just like they do today.

I hike to go fishing here. This lake has great big cut throat trout.

Oregon Grape displays the colors of the rainbow as it cycles through the growing season. The phase I’ve painted is what we see in the mid to late summer months here in the Rockies where I’m now staying for awhile.

This view is my drive home in the summertime. Typically, the clouds gather and a bit of rain falls each afternoon. After the shower, everything is a bit greener and the sky is full of sifted light filtering through to the mountains and western pastures. My painting is about the light as it slides through the clouds.

Each year in Westcliffe, CO, A Painted View Ranch sponsors the Sangre de Cristo Classic Cutting Horse Show. I go and take photos. It’s a great show, the horses and cattle are magnificent and the action is non-stop.

This painting shows alpine flowers as they start to bloom in the late spring. They are shown in the late afternoon sun as I started back from a day of fishing at Comanche Lake, elevation 11,000+ feet. I caught four large cutthroat trout and this image to reminds me of that day.

Fairy Slippers, Calypso bulbosa are orchids, somewhat rare and a delight to find. These flowers were emerging along the Rainbow Trail in southeast Colorado.

When I walk in the campground next to our house, I pick stuff up to look at later. This ponderosa twig caught my eye for its shape and texture.

Dozens of varieties of Opuntia are in bloom in these early May days in Arizona. I found this blossom at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix. I’m inspired in this painting by the semi-transparent petals and the contrast of vermilion against aquas, greens and purples.

Argentine Giant Cacti – Echinopsis candicans, 12×9″, 2018, copyrighted with all rights reserved by Jean Krueger
This cactus grows in our neighborhood. It is low to the ground and spreads by growing outward from its middle. It blooms at night and has deliciosly fragrant blooms.The blooms when open are about 12″ across and closely spaced. A Giant Argentine Cactus in bloom is quite a sight to see.
