We walk a lot while we’re in Sweden, usually 5 to 7 miles daily. I’m always looking on the ground for interesting stuff and picked up this pair of little cones. I spent awhile Googling to identify their species, but not much luck, maybe some sort of Piñon. If anyone has an idea, let meContinue reading “Little Pine Cones”

Allium ampeloprasum – Elephant Garlic
The genus Allium is a fabulous species. It includes the garlics, notably the Elephant Garlic as celebrated by this painting. When in bloom they are showy beyond words, when roasted with olive oil and on sour dough, well, you’d think you’d died and gone to heaven. Enjoy! https://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/1148690
Allium cepa – Common Onion
In praise of the lowly but lovely onion.
Ocotillo
Ocotillos, indigenous to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona and Mexico, are a plant with long, spiny leafed stems bearing flags of densely packed orange to red flowers at their tips. Their branches grow to 15-20 ft. high in tight clusters. Have you ever seen one? https://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/1066090
Sugar Pine Cone – Pinus lambertiana
Drawn to scale, the cone of the Sugar Pine shown here is in the medium range in size. These cones can grow to over two feet in length. They are superb in their symetry and the rythmic spiraling of their woody scales. https://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/1029498
Eastern White Pine Cones – Pinus Strobus
Painted for shape and complexity. https://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/1022049
Echinopsis chiloensis – Hedgehog Cactus
The cactus grows not far from the house in Arizona. The media, casein is new to me. Totally opaque, it’s quite different from the watercolor with which I’m familiar. It’s like gouache. a lot easier than watercolor, it has a very different look and feel, very graphic an illustrative, less touchy feely. https://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/1004456
Gambel Oak – Quercus gambelii
The oaks are starting to change colors here in the Colorado montane. The colors will be in the yellow/brown range this year due to the conditions that prevailed around here last summer. The leaves will fall by November and re-emerge next May, one of life’s comforting certainties. https://www.dailypaintworks.com/buy/auction/1001229
Bees and San Pedro Cactus
I was delighted to come across this scene while walking, bees and cacti interacting. Both are topics I really like to portray, I am fascinated by the shapes and geometries of both. I love botanical paintings. $60 USD, $5 to ship https://www.dailypaintworks.com/fineart/jean-krueger/san-pedro-cactus/715272
Amaryllis

Agave in the Shade, 2018, Watercolor, 8×8″, copyrighted with all rights reserved by Jean Krueger There are over 200 species of agaves and I have no idea which this is.
