Amaryllis

I’m going to paint my amaryllis bullb as it emerges over the next month or so. I’ve planted it an a container and it sits outside on the Arizona patio. Amaryllis are hardy in the ground to US Zone 8. Arizona temperatures can dip to below 40F where we live during the winter so I may have to bring it inside on some nights.

I’ll document its emerging leaves and multiple blossoms over the next six weeks. I’m going to use different media and chose pen and ink for this first image in order to portray detail I often miss with other media.

Amaryllis bulbs show up in markets during December in the United States and every year I buy one. I used to buy them for all my relatives until I realized they don’t share my enthusiasm for this wonderful piece of botanica.
