Another take on fall at Engelke’s farm. This painting follows the movement of trees and the shadows they cast.

On the water at sunset, Raquette Lake, NY.

A view from a Hornbeck canoe, late summer at dusk.

This is a study for an larger oil painting executed during the same session. I use the study to locate objects, study the movement of the composition and to use as a reference when composing the oil painting.

The Start of Autumn in Upstate New York.

Hunting season. Meow.

This is a Trout Fly, designed and tied by Ted Krueger. It’s a Wet Fly which means it goes beneath the surface of the water rather than floating on top. The hook is ‘bent back’ which means the barb is on top. It’s made from feathers and wool fiber.

Greyling is a fresh water fish that lives at high altitudes (think Colorado). It’s a relative of trout but has scales whereas trout do not. It’s painted at close to full scale. They’re quite colorful.

Looking North, monsoon day.

Classic cat pose. Meow.

Rock Bass are warm water fish, This one was caught and released in Lake Adirondack in upstate New York. Pastels are a really good media when depicting the vibrant nuances of shiny, scaly fish, much easier for me to control than watercolor.

It’s summer and the Sun Fish dart about the warm shallows just off shore. There are several varieties. This one is a ‘Pumpkin Seed”, named so because of the distinctive red/orange ‘ear’ on its gill.

Ocotillos, indigenous to the Sonoran Desert in Arizona and Mexico, are a plant with long, spiny leafed stems bearing flags of densely packed orange to red flowers at their tips. Their branches grow to 15-20 ft. high in tight clusters. Have you ever seen one?

Getta bug. Meow

Olana is the Victorian home of Frederick Church, a 19th c. landscape artist credited with the founding of the Hudson River School of painting. This painting is one view of the many panoramic sights that can be seen from this hilltop monument. The house is open to the public and a fascinating way to spend 2-3 hours. Bring your paints. I painted this sitting hunkered down on a bench in the damp New York winter.

July is Rodeo in Westcliffe, Colorado, and mixed team roping is one of my favorite events. The woman, the man and both horses work in tight partnership to rope a calf while riding at a full gallop out of the shoot. It’s not easy, and there’s a lot more misses than successful roping of a running beast.

Painted en plein aire with the doors open to the cold wet night, this was entered in the Sangres Art Guild Alla Prima Westcliffe competition in September 2019. It was painted as I was hunkered down in my car with the door open. Plein aire is not my favorite way to paint a nocturne. It can be a real challenge, not that I’m not up for challenges. It’s a skill to be acquired through practice, lots of practice
