Oregon Grape

Oregon Grape displays the colors of the rainbow as it cycles through the growing season. The phase I’ve painted is what we see in the mid to late summer months here in the Rockies where I’m now staying for awhile.

Nakota, An American Breed

IMG_20180805_201450Nakoata, An American Breed, 2018,Professional watercolors on 140# hot press paper, masked border, copyrighted with all rights reserved by Jean Krueger

The Nakota mustang is a feral breed of horses, the decendants of those riden by Native Americans in the 19th century in the upper plains of the United States. Driven to extinction by the mid 20th century they have been captured and bred in recent years in order to perserve this American breed. Nakotas are stout and muscular, smart and quick. Seeing them, I can agree they are something special.

This view is my drive home in the summertime. Typically, the clouds gather and a bit of rain falls each afternoon. After the shower, everything is a bit greener and the sky is full of sifted light filtering through to the mountains and western pastures. My painting is about the light as it slides through the clouds.

This week I’m painting poppies because they’re blooming all over town. They don’t last long and will all be to seed by next week.

Thistles

This studies a small thistle I found while on a walk. The paper it’s painted on is a Strathmore product, that has a tan-ish cast and contains 30% recycled material. It’s the first time I’ve painted on it…it’s okay. I prefer white papers but it’s nice for experimenting with color and imagery.

This studies a dried Canada Thistle I found while taking a walk. It’s drawn with ink…I think this is the first drawing I’ve posted in that media.
A few weeks back while teaching beginners watercolor and pastel classes I became aware how REALLY important drawing skills are to any person learning to paint.
I now want to learn to draw better.

I go by this place almost daily. It’s a lovely view, always different owing to the weather or time of year.
This painting studies the movement of sky and the pattern of light in the fields as the the winds shift the sun’s rays.

Each year in Westcliffe, CO, A Painted View Ranch sponsors the Sangre de Cristo Classic Cutting Horse Show. I go and take photos. It’s a great show, the horses and cattle are magnificent and the action is non-stop.

The painting is about equestrian action and skill, back-lighting and the capture of motion. It was fun to paint.

Flat, late afternoon sun on a cold winter day in a dry Arizona desert made this prickly pear cactus jump with color and shadow. I saw it on the way back to the car after fishing…no bites that day.
